National Autistic Society Bristol Branch
Hello and welcome to the Bristol Branch National Autistic Society's home page.

National Autistic Society Bristol Branch
Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to National Autistic Society, Bristol Branch. We are all parents and carers of dependants who have autism spectrum disorder.

We hold drop ins for parents and carers during term time, in the John James Room at Windmill Hill City Farm, Philip Street Bedminster. New parents are welcome, irrespective of their young person’s diagnosis. Small children, and those out of school, are welcome under parental supervision. Coffee and Tea are served, and a £1 contribution is requested to help us cover our costs. Benefits of joining the national autistic society include access to special programmes to help us understand how to manage our children’s behaviour, telephone advocacy, and a wide range of leaflets (see nas.org.uk) and books to help us help our children.

Locally, your branch lobbies for you for play activities, and appropriate education.

On behalf of the branch, I have taken part in the consultation on delegation of special educational needs funding to schools. This has to happen in line with national policy.

You can read the consultation documents at http://www.bristol-cyps.org.uk/policies/sen-consultation-stage2.html.

Parent volunteers of ASD children wanted!

With regret, our fantastic playdays coordinator, Marianne, has to stand down. Like myself, her ASD child is growing up, and I would really appreciate offers of help so that we can continue running our exclusive access play events. It's a volunteer role which is a cross between party organiser and email wizard. You don't have to attend the events yourself, but if you would like to discuss it further, please email me at nasbristol2@hotmail.com.

Our play events require parents to remain responsible for the health, safety and wellbeing of our children at all times.

In school holidays, subject to funding, and parent volunteers willing to take responsibility, we run exclusive access parent led play activities. Activities range from exclusive parties at Avon Valley country park, to soft play, swims, cinema visits, and we have tried laser quest! Access to these is on a first come first serve basis, and limited to those parents from whom a membership form has been received. All these activities are dependent on contributions from parents, and subsidised by local fundraising. We cannot offer transport. (We receive a small amount from families who have joined the national society and nominated “Bristol” as their branch).

All activities are notified on our website:
http://bristol.digicity.co.uk/Clubs-Societies/National_Autistic_Society_Bristol_Branch-539761552id.html

The special early opening dates for Hengrove Playpark will continue on the following dates; Sunday 19 July for an hours play from 9am.

The drop in dates are usually the third Wednesday of the month and the next one will be on Wednesday July 15th.

If you are not yet a member of our local group you can contact Branch Officer, Kathryn Mason, for details of how to join.

There is no annual subscription fee, however, should you wish to make a voluntary donation towards the administration costs for our database and regular information of our school holiday family activity events and booking forms that would be most welcome.

For parents and carers of young adults with ASD there is an aspergers teens group who meet on the first Sunday of each month at the Centre for the Deaf, Stokes Croft, Bristol, 7.00 – 9.00 p.m. For more information please contact Jenny Griffin on 0117 9090598.

And finally, if you would like to contact me, ring 0117 904 7682 or email
NASBristolBranch@nas.org.uk
We look forward to meeting you.

Yours faithfully

Kathryn Mason
NAS Bristol Branch Officer
